Jeffrey Joe Gatewood, 51, born October 30, 1959, died on Thursday, August 4, 2011, after a brief struggle with colon cancer. Ott & Lee Funeral Home, Hwy 80, Brandon handling arrangements, with visitation Friday, August 5, from 5pm until 8pm. The funeral service is at 2 pm Saturday in the chapel, with family graveside services at the Gatewood Family Cemetery south of Forest.
A 1977 Wingfield High School graduate, he became owner and operator of two Exxon Stations in Jackson, MS. One at Ellis Avenue and Robinson, and the other in Van Winkle on Highway 80 East. Following the end of that career, he dabbled in other small business ventures. He enjoyed playing golf, tinkering with electronics and watching NASCAR races.
He is preceded in death by his father, Joe Marion Gatewood, and his mother, Bobbye Tadlock Gatewood, both of Jackson, MS. He leaves behind his brother, Toby Gatewood (Kay) of Pelahatchie, MS; aunt, Joyce Fleming (Bobby) of Grenada, MS; aunt, Rila Dixon of Forest; aunt, Nelda Stringer (John) of Gulfport; niece, Sherry Gatewood Patton (Eric) and their sons, Ryan and Thomas, of Memphis, TN; and many Perkins, May, Fleming and Gatewood cousins.
The family is appreciative to Dr. Robert Watson, Hazlehurst, for his thoughtful and kind medical care during Jeff’s brief illness. Appreciation is also extended to Hospice Ministries for all they do for those who need their help and services, and the family asks that memorials be made to them in lieu of flowers.
