Jerrell Burl Purvis, 81, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away Sun. Dec. 18, 2016 at Baptist Hospital in Jackson, MS. Visitation will be held on Tues. Dec. 20, 2016 from 5pm-7pm at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, MS. A funeral service will be 11am on Wed. Dec. 21, 2016 at the Ott & Lee Funeral Home Chapel in Brandon, MS with a 2pm graveside service to follow at Wesson Cemetery in Wesson, MS.
Jerrell was born on Dec. 26, 1934 in Crystal Springs, MS, to the late J.B. and Myra Purvis. He accepted Jesus as his Savior at a young age, and was baptized at First Baptist Church in Crystal Springs, MS. He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Brandon, MS.
Jerrell graduated from Crystal Springs High School in 1953, where he participated in all sports, and served as Class President and Student Body President. He then graduated from Copiah-Lincoln Junior College in 1955, where he played football and track, and from Mississippi College in 1957, where he played football and was a member of the M Club. In 1966, he completed his M.Ed. at Mississippi College.
In 1958, Jerrell married Donna Ruth Keenan from Wesson, MS and they had 58 wonderful years of marriage. Jerrell loved his career of teaching and coaching football and track for 38 years at Crystal Springs High School, Forest Hill High School, Tupelo High School, and Mississippi College. Coach Purvis always tried to inspire students and athletes to do their very best and to enjoy being a part of their school and team.
Coach Purvis was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Edrie Sue McCleland. He is survived by his wife, Donna Purvis; two daughters, Lisa Purvis of Brandon, MS and Lori Harrison (Robert) of New Bern, NC; granddaughter, Lynley Harrison Heath (Christopher) and grandson, Zachary Harrison all of New Bern, NC; sisters, Maxine Hickman (Lynn) of Terry, MS and Maurine Pickett of Pearl, MS; brother, Don Purvis (Bunny) of Baton Rouge, LA; his nieces, nephews, cousins, and his special dogs, Murphy and Miley.
