Jewel Shedd Bates, 92, joined her Heavenly Father and began her eternal life with Jesus on Friday, November 05, 2010 at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. Services are 2pm Sunday, November 7 at Lake Harbor Baptist Church with burial to follow in Mt. Pisgah Baptist Cemetery. Visitation is 4pm until 7pm Saturday at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon and 1 pm Sunday at the church.

Mrs. Bates was born in the Rehobeth Community of Rankin County to William Thomas Shedd and Mary Kate Williams Shedd, who preceded her in death. She was born one of nine children on December 9, 1917.

She and her late husband, Claude E. Bates were married in 1937 and were charter members of Lake Harbor Baptist Church. Jewel managed Liberty Dry Cleaners in Canton for many years.

Mrs. Bates was also preceded in death by a great grandchild, Thad Lea. She is survived by her two daughters, Bobbye B. Hayes, husband Charles of Goshen Springs and Elizabeth B. Johnson of Madison; two sisters, Dorothy Hartford of Brandon and Ruth Logan of Rehobeth; brother, Charles Shedd of Petal, MS; four grandchildren, Beverly Milner (Jay) of Yazoo City, Lori Grissett of Ridgeland, Cindy Graham (Tim) Madison, Tammy ZumMallen (Todd) of Madison; seven great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Memorials may be made to Lake Harbor Baptist Church, 3973 Hwy 43 N., Brandon, MS 39047.
