Mr. Jewel “Johnny” Thornton, age 76 a resident of Morton, MS died on Thursday May 29, 2014 at the Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland, MS.
Funeral Services were conducted at 1:00 pm Saturday, May 31, 2014 at the Rock Bluff Baptist Church with interment in the Rock Bluff Baptist Church Cemetery in Daniel. Visitation was held from 5pm-9pm Friday May 30, 2014 and Saturday 9am-11am May 31, 2014 at the Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Morton. Rev. Donnie Stuart officiated the services.
Mr. Thornton was born in Polkville on February 26, 1938. He was a member of the Rock Bluff Baptist Church in Daniel, MS. He was formerly employed by Central Welding and MS Steel as a steel worker and welder and had been working in this occupation since 1966. He loved wood crafting, outdoors, fishing, car racing, playing with Cricket his dog and he thoroughly loved all aspects of aviation.
Mr. Thornton was preceded in death by his parents, Rufus Aden and Rachel Traxler Thornton; brother, Bill Thornton; son-in-law, Dwayne Jones; and granddaughter, Gabrielle Tibbs.
Mr. Thornton is survived by his wife, Margie Bradshaw Thornton; daughters, Angela Thornton Polk (Charlie) of Morton and Lisa M. Jones (Bubba) of Brandon; sons, Richard W. Thornton (Danna) of Sand Hill and Greg Kelly of Daniel, MS; brother, Sammy Thornton (Sharon) of Newton, MS; grandchildren, Chris Jones (Tina), Jeremiah Thornton, Jacob Thornton, Christin Polk, Crystal Murphy, Nikki Dill; great grandchildren, Kelley Dill, Kennedy Dill, Piper Murphy, Landry Dill, and Caleb Lipsey; and numerous family and friends.
Pallbearers were Jacob Thornton, Jeremiah Thornton, Bobby Joe Jordan, Dickie Dukes, Deroy Reese, and J.P. Means. Honorary Pallbearers were Chris Jones, Robert Owen Phillips, and Ray Idler.
