Joan Meyer, 79, of Brandon, MS, passed away on February 18 in Jackson, MS. She was born on December 3, 1945 in Robinsdale, MN to Floyd and Lois Olson Fisher.
Ms. Meyer grew up in south Minneapolis attending Henry Clay School, Phillips Junior High School and South High School from which she graduated in June,1963. She started at the University of Minnesota that fall quarter beginning a program in broadcast Journalism. After two quarters, she began working at a variety of jobs such as an NCR operator at Midland Bank, secretary at H. Larson Studio and salesclerk at Sears & Dayton’s. None were career choices but lots of fun anyway.
After the birth of sons, Jeff and Jeremy, Ms. Meyer went back to the University to complete her degree in 1976. Since it was not a great time to get a journalism job in Minnesota, she again got secretarial and sales jobs while raising her sons.
Ms. Meyer left Minneapolis in 1983 living for 10 months in New Jersey where she worked as an airline passenger service agent where she met many great people. The summer of 1984 she and the boys moved to Spring, Texas where she married Gary McCaffrey in 1986. In Spring, Ms. Meyer worked as a bartender. That was a really fun job!
Ms. Meyer moved in 1989 to Las Vegas, NV, where she got a teaching certificate and later a Master’s degree in Women’s History at the University of Nevada. While working on her Master’s degree, she became a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society and Phi Alpha Theta Honor Society. Not able to get a teaching job in Las Vegas, she moved to Jackson, MS, in 1997 where she taught social studies at Wingfield High School for 14 years. She enjoyed her students and teaching very much. She made many good friends among the teachers and staff at Wingfield.
Ms. Meyer’s parents died many years ago and she missed them and her good friends Rosann Robinson and Jim Johnson until she died. She is survived by her sons, Jeffery Meyer, Jeremy Meyer (Lisa) and her grandchildren: Michael George, Jonathan Meyer (Carissa), Christopher Meyer and Christina Meyer, and her great grandson Hudson. She also leaves many more friends and relatives whom she loved.
A Celebration of Joan’s Life will be Sunday, February 23, 2025, at 3:00pm at Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Brandon with visitation beginning at 2:00pm.
