Joan Warren Pennington

Brandon, MS

Joan Warren Pennington was born in Jackson, MS in 1934 to parents Jack A. and Lilla Mangum Warren.

She graduated from Mendenhall High School and the University of Southern Mississippi with graduate courses at Mississippi State University. While in college Joan participated in extra curricular activities. She was also a member of the Phi Mu Sorority and honor societies, Kappa Omicron Phi and Kappa Delta Pi.

After graduation, Joan returned to Mendenhall to teach Home Economics. The following spring she met her future husband, Walt Pennington. They were married in 1956. Later, their three children’s varied interest in soccer, baseball, golf, tennis, ballet, band, piano, scouting, and children’s theater presented a challenge as “taxi driver” getting them to their events on time. Knowing how to sew helped in making their costumes for programs and the theater.

Through the years Joan and family regularly attended the Methodist church where she sang in the choir, worked with the youth, and took an active part in church programs.

Some of her civic activities included Corinth and Tupelo Junior Auxiliary (recording secretary), Order of the Eastern Star (Ruth and Esther), Corinth Four Season Garden Club (Vice-president), and Clinton, NC area PTA.

Joan enjoyed oil painting classes with friends at Sampson Community College, NC. Her favorite hobbies were playing bridge and working Sudoku puzzles.

After retirement Walt and Joan moved to Brandon to be near family and make special memories with the grandchildren. Joan was a part of the Joy Sunday School Class at First Methodist that played Mexican Train Dominoes-a good time to talk, eat and visit with friends.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Lilla Warren, her husband, Walter Pennington, and son, John Walter Pennington. Survivors include her brother, Jack J. (Ava) Warren; son Brett Pennington; daughter, Amy (Andy) May; grandchildren, Jessica Dennis, John (Ashley) Dennis, Lake Stevens; and great grandchildren, John, Charlotte, and Wesley.

Funeral services will be 11am Wednesday, March 19, 2025, at Brandon First Methodist Church with visitation starting at 10am. Burial will follow in D’lo Cemetery around 2pm. Ott & Lee Funeral Home of Brandon, MS was entrusted to the care of arrangements.
