Joe Ann Burney Neely went home to the Lord December 2, 2016.
Born to the late Pearla Mae Harrell and Joe Lyerlie Burney on February 21, 1930 in Jackson, MS. She graduated from Central High School in 1948. Joe Ann retired from Surgical Clinic of Jackson after 20 years as a medical transcriptionist and secretary.
Joe Ann is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 48 years, Vernon Neely, Sr. They were active members of Frist Baptist of Richland where she served as nursery director and taught Sunday school. They began a tradition of traveling to Oxford to watch the Ole Miss Rebels.
Joe Ann found great enjoyment in spending time and being active in her grandchildren’s lives. She spent many hours cheering on her seven grandchildren in their various sports and activities. Joe Ann famously had a designated parking spot at the third base line at both Prep and Millsaps. She embraced her role as “Granny” to all.
Along with her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Doris Mae Cheatham, daughter Karen Ann Neely, and grandson Michael Tait Hendrix.
Survivors include daughters Susan (Robert) Bryan and Melinda (Steve) Hendrix, son Vernon Dell (Sylvia) Neely, Jr., seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and various nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Sunday, December 4 from 5:00-8:00pm and services will be Monday, December 5 at 10:00am both at Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Richland, MS. Burial will follow in the Richland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please make donations to mississippifca.org or jackson.va.gov/giving.
