Joe Herbert Sanderson, 84, passed away Saturday, June 25, 2011 at Crossgates River Oaks Hospital in Brandon. Visitation is 5-7 pm Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Brandon. Services are 11 am Thursday at Crossgates United Methodist Church with burial in Brandon Memorial Gardens.

Joe was born in Oktibbeha County and was the son of Joe Claiborne Sanderson and Essie Graham Sanderson. He spent most of his life in Brandon and was a graduate of Brandon High School. Immediately after graduation, he joined the Navy where after basic training he served aboard the submarine tender USS Pelias and USS Aegir. Joe was proud to serve and attended many reunions of the USS Pelias. Upon returning home, he attended Hinds Community College and for a while he owned and operated a sawmill. Joe later graduated from Millsaps College where he majored in physics and was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha.

After graduation from Millsaps, Joe taught radar at Keesler Field in Biloxi for two years. The next six years he worked for the Corp of Engineers in Concrete Research at the sub-station in Clinton. Joe spent most of his working life in insurance and real estate with Sanderson and Morrow and later received a law degree from the Jackson School of Law and formed the law firm, Morrow and Sanderson.

Joe was very active in church and civic organizations. He grew up in the Oakdale Baptist Church and later became a member of First United Methodist Church for forty-six years where early on he was a steward and assistant Sunday School Treasurer and Superintendent. His last years were spent at Crossgates United Methodist Church where he served as trustee chairman and on the building committee. He also was president and a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class and member of the UMM.

Joe was a longtime member of the Lions Club where he held all local offices, served as District Governor and received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award. He was a volunteer with the Red Cross working especially during Camille. Joe was also a member of the Veterans Administration, American Legion where he once held a state office.

Next to God and family, Joe’s greatest love was “fast cars”. He traded often both cars and trucks and won many medals and trophies for his antique cars. Joe was a big NASCAR fan and attended races at Daytona and Talladega as long as his health would allow. After retirement he transported cars for Gray- Daniels Ford and worked at Thompson’s Antiques.

His daughter, Beth Watson and brother,Ted Sanderson preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Martha Loflin Sanderson; daughter, Dr. Gail Anderson and husband Dr. Jim Anderson; granddaughters, Beth Ann Wann and husband Matt, Megan Anderson Garvey and husband Sean, Leigh Anna Watson, Lindsey Anderson Triplett and husband Ray; grandson, Joel Anderson; son-in-law, Ed Watson and many nieces and nephews.
