Mr. Joe Lynn Roberts, age 65, a resident of Hattiesburg and formerly of Forest, died on Saturday, May 17, 2014 in Hattiesburg after a long illness.
Services for Mr. Roberts were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at the Forest Baptist Church. Burial was at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Carr Methodist Church Cemetery. Officiating the services were Rev. Paul Roller, Rev. Scott Fortenberry, Rev. Terry Roberts and John White. Visitation was at the Forest Baptist Church on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until the service at 11 a.m.
Joe was born on April 21, 1949, the third child of James Howard Roberts and Josephine Winstead Roberts and graduated from Forest High School and East Central Jr. College where he played football. In his senior year at FHS, he was selected Mr. Forest High School by his fellow students. He served in the National Guard, worked in banking and farming and was a member of the Forest Baptist Church. He served his church as a member of the Son Shiner’s Sunday School Class, a men’s Bible study and was a Deacon for a period of time.
Joe suffered a stroke in June 2008, leaving him permanently paralyzed and he resided at the Hattiesburg Health and Rehabilitation Center after that. The Son Shiner’s Class sent cards and prayed for Joe until his death. He never recovered physically or mentally from the stroke.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Larry Howard Roberts of Ridgeland, MS.
His survivors include his sister, Maxine Roberts Dement and her husband, Dr. Frank E. Dement III, their children, James Dement and his wife, Sandy, Michelle Dement Williams and her husband, Pete Williams and several nieces and nephews; Jay Roberts, Alyson Adcox, Cameron Dement, Kaylan Williams, Ashley Williams and Carey Williams as well as Telise Lavender Roberts Byrd.
Joe was instrumental in keeping the Roberts family reunion going for 42 years and was loved by many in his extended family and friends.

Pallbearers were John Billy Winstead, Bill Roberts, Jay Roberts, Martin Webb, Gerald Moore and Mark Roberts. Honorary pallbearers were the Son Shiner’s Class at Forest Baptist Church, Dave Roudebush, Jerry Lee and the Chapel Prayer Group.
Ott & Lee Funeral Home of Forest was in charge of arrangements.
