Mr. John D. Carroll, Sr. of Brandon, MS. went to be with the Lord Sunday morning (his favorite day and time of the week!), January 24, 2016, at 1:18 am. John was born April 21, 1932 in Chatham, LA, the son of the late William Fred Carroll and Bessie Ponder Carroll; he was preceded in death by two sisters: Hilda Marie Exline and Myrtle Reese Frantz, and by four brothers: Charles Lloyd Carroll, Alton Carl Carroll, R.T. Carroll, and Fred Odell Carroll.
He was an active business man, owning and operating several Mississippi restaurants. He began his career with Sears, Roebuck, & Company in Monroe, LA. He then went into business and built one of the first Bonanza Sirloin Pits in Mississippi, located on Highway 80 in Jackson. Later he built Bonanzas in Meridian and Greenville. In 1974, he bought the Bonanza in Natchez and lived there with his family. He loved the restaurant business and built the Village Cafeteria in the Natchez Mall and Jada’s Waffle Houses in Natchez and Vidalia, LA. Upon retirement from business, John settled in the Jackson area.
He enjoyed meeting, greeting, and being with people; he had a talent, knowledge, and passion for current events and history, for cooking and hospitality, and for building and construction (and repairing just about anything); he was very astute in business operations and financial numbers.
John was very active in various local Churches of God - Anderson, IN church congregations over his lifetime in Louisiana and Mississippi, most recently, with Olde Towne Community Church in Ridgeland, MS - a church and church family he loved dearly, serving in many capacities including the church council, as church treasurer for many years, and as a greeter.
He was a strong witness for Jesus until his passing. He had a genuine deep love for all people, and “he never met a stranger.” Wherever he went, whether to a local eatery or taking food to elderly shut-ins or providing a helping hand to anyone in need or just encountering someone wherever he was at the moment, he would engage individuals or families with a smile and with cheery conversation, and would eventually share that he loved them and “do you know Jesus?”
He cherished the reading of God’s Word and had many favorite scriptures but the one he shared the most with family, friends, and especially strangers he would meet for the first time, was John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him, should not perish but have everlasting life.”
John is survived by his wife, Ruth W. Carroll, former wife Kiyoko O. Carroll, 4 daughters - Judy Murray, Georgia Conn, Catherine Allison (Brian), Janie Dukes, and 2 sons Johnny Carroll (Karana) and David Stewart (Terry), seventeen grandchildren: grandsons - Charlie Murray, Don Conn, Kevin Conn (preceded his grandfather in death in 2014), Jason Dukes, Scott Dukes, Jordan Carroll, Thad Stewart, and Neal Stewart; granddaughters - Christy Murray Campbell, Candice Hammel, Kelly Murray Sinclair, Evonne Hammel, Krissi Dukes, Tori Carroll Roop, Ashlan Allison, Alee Carroll, and Jena Stewart Rush. He had 7 great-grandchildren – Michael Jason Campbell, Preston Campbell, Strauss Sinclair, Kashton Conn, Theo Dukes, Carter Murray, and Daniel Sinclair.
John loved his country and deeply respected the military and served overseas during the Korean War. At the time of his death he was under Hospice Care at the V.A. Medical Center in Jackson where he received excellent care and much love from the very capable nurses, support services, and medical team, particularly, Dr. Jo. (We express our sincere thanks to all of you.)
A funeral service will be held Friday, January 29, 11:00 am at Olde Towne Community Church (OTCC) in Ridgeland, MS. Visitation, also at OTCC, will be Thursday, January 28, 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm and Friday, January 29, 10:00 am – 11:00 am. A military graveside service will follow the funeral service at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens in Pearl, MS.
