John Chatham

John Harold Chatham, 89, formerly of Heidelberg, Mississippi and Jasper, Alabama, passed away Sunday, April 25, 2010 at Crossgates River Oaks Hospital in Brandon after a brief illness. Visitation is 12-1 pm Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at Heidelberg United Methodist Church in Heidelberg, MS. Graveside services will follow at 1:15 pm at Heidelberg City Cemetery. Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Brandon is handling arrangements.

Mr. Chatham was the son of Bessie and Will Chatham of Vossburg, Mississippi. A native of Vossburg, he graduated from Pachuta High School. While attending Jones Junior College, Pearl Harbor was bombed and he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard where he proudly served in the South Pacific during World War II. After the war he enrolled at what was then Mississippi State College and graduated in 1948 with a degree in Dairy Manufacturing. Mr. Chatham spent his entire career in the field of Dairy Manufacturing before retiring to Heidelberg, MS. Some of his happiest times were returning to Mississippi State University during homecoming weekend to reunite with fellow classmates in the Dairy Science Department and share old memories.

Mr. Chatham was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Chatham; brother, Martin Chatham; sisters, Willa Mae Phillips and Nona Risher.

Survivors include his daughter, Sandy Martin and husband Ken of Cato, MS and son, John Koniar and wife Linda of Foley, Alabama. In addition, he is survived by his grandchildren, Brent (Shelby) and Brad Martin of Cato, MS, and Todd (Kim) Koniar of Magnolia Springs, AL, Mell (Webb) Davis of Foley, AL and Rob (Sarah) Koniar of Lewisville, TX.; great-grandchildren, Catherine Ann, Bradley, Clair and Shelby Chatham. He is also survived by Dianah Risher and John and Tina Risher, special family members.
