John Lewis

March 25, 1938 — March 16, 2015

John Harry Lewis, 76, went to Heaven to be with Our Lord and Savior on March 16, 2015 after a brief illness.

He is survived by his beloved wife: Sylvia Sue Lewis of Knoxville, TN; children: Lynn Unger and her husband Kurt, of Anaconda, MT; Amy Lewis of Gainesville, FL; Steve Lewis and his wife, Jill of St. Simons Island, GA; stepchildren: Mary Anne Arkus of Knoxville, TN; Martha Wagner and her husband, Warren of Manassas, VA; Martin Arkus and his wife Leslie of Tucson, AZ; grandchildren: Shannon, Bryan, Jackson, Julia, Nolan, Tyler, Caleb, Jadyn, Cullen, and Jessa; sisters: Rosemary L. Stiteler, Canel Winchester, OH; Daphne L. Glaze and husband, Robert of Birmingham, AL, as well as a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Clorene Stroud Lewis and John Clark Lewis; a brother: Billy Clark Lewis; stepfather: Royal Long; and brother-in-law: Russ Stiteler.

He was a member of Salem Baptist Church in Lake, MS.

Family will receive friends at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Forest on Friday, March 20, 2105 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. The funeral will be conducted in the Ott & Lee Chapel on Saturday, March 21, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev Sammy Stroud officiating with interment immediately following at Salem Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be James Johnston, Percy Wayne Everett, Jimmy McDill, Bryan Unger, Jackson Lewis, Tyler Wagner, Caleb Wagner and Warren Wagner.

Honorary Pallbearer will be Carlton Stroud.

John Harry was an accomplished self-made man. He was a graduate of both Mississippi State University and LSU, where he obtained his Masters Degree and worked on his Doctorate. Additionally, he was later a member of the faculty at LSU. He moved to Knoxville, TN to work for the Tennessee Valley Authority as head of Parks and Recreation for Tennessee. Accomplished in his field, he was featured in National Geographic Magazine and was consultant on the movie “Deliverance.” Having built a successful real estate business, he achieved many other accomplishments throughout his life on Earth. He was always proud of the fact that he was a member of the Sons of the Confederacy and enjoyed doing genealogy research. John Harry will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
