John Rogers, Sr.

John Milben Rogers, Sr., 84, passed away on July 4, 2013 at home. Visitation was held on Saturday, July 6, at Ott and Lee Funeral home Brandon, MS from 5:00-8:00. On Sunday, July 7, visitation was at 1:00 at First Baptist Church of Morton, MS, with funeral services beginning at 2:00. Burial was in Morton City Cemetery. John was born on June 13, 1929 in Jackson, MS to Bennie Clyde Rogers, Sr. and Mildred Vignes Sanders. John was raised in Morton, MS and graduated from Morton High School in 1947. He received a B.S. degree in finance and marketing from Mississippi College in 1951. He attended the graduate school of business at Tulane University. After graduation, he returned home to help his father at B.C. Rogers Poultry. Following his father’s death, he became president of B.C. Rogers Poultry. During his career at B.C. Rogers Poultry, he had multiple business ventures including E&R Sunflower Grocery stores and Rogers & Shipp Department store. John was a partner in many family businesses including B.C. Rogers Oil Company, Rogers Farms, and B.C. Rogers Construction Company. Prior to his death he was a shareholder and board member of the Bank of Morton. Throughout his multiple business ventures, he turned his love of cars into a business, owning several car dealerships in the southeast. Before his death, he was Vice President of Rogers-Dabbs Chevrolet in Brandon, MS.
During his life and career he served on several boards and received many awards including, founding and becoming the first President of the Morton Chamber of Commerce, being the youngest President of the MS Manufacturer’s Association, Chairman of the National Broiler Council, Chairman of the MS Poultry Association, Board of Trustees at Mississippi College, President and Trustee of Southern Tennis Patrons, Director and Board member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, 1998 “Man of the Year” in Progressive Farmer, 1992 Mississippi College Alumnus of the Year, and MS Poultry Hall of Fame. John was an avid sports fan and player. He was the quarterback at Morton high school and played football at Mississippi College, where he was inducted into the Mississippi College Sports Hall of Fame. He was a lifelong tennis player. In 1989 he was ranked #1 in the south 60’s doubles and was ranked #8 in the nation. In 2000, he was inducted into the MS Tennis Hall of Fame. John was preceded in death by his father, B.C. Rogers, Sr. and Janelle Rogers, and his mother, Mildred Sanders and Oliver Sanders, and his son, John M. Rogers, Jr. Survivors include his wife, Beth Rogers; children, Rebecca Rogers, Carolyn Rogers Bevan-Thomas (Paul), Cathy Rogers, Jack Rogers, and Angela Proctor; brothers, Ben Rogers (Randy) and Luckett Sanders and sister Martha Rogers; grandchildren, Allyson Wright, Michael Wallis (Haley), Andrew Bevan-Thomas, William Bevan-Thomas, Isabelle Bevan-Thomas, Zachary Flores, Hays Rogers, Max Rogers, Ellie Rogers, Jackson Rogers, Devon Rogers, Hannah Proctor, Jacob Proctor, Samuel Proctor, and Phoebe Proctor; great-grandchildren, Brooks Wallis and Grace Wallis.
