JOHN MAJURE SANDERS, born in Harperville, MS, August 13, 1925, died in Birmingham AL, January 2, 2015 at the age of 89. John was the youngest child of Claude and Una Sanders of Harperville, MS.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jo Upchurch Sanders, and son, John Mark Sanders. His survivors are: daughter Melissa Sanders Watkins of Huntsville, son Phil Sanders (wife Sheila) of Birmingham, and six grandchildren (Alex Sanders, Ben Sanders, Jim Watkins, Jordan Sanders, Steven Sanders, and John H. Sanders).

John graduated from Mississippi State with a bachelor’s degree in agriculture. After farming a few years, business opportunities led to working for Fred’s Dollar Stores and Baddour Corporation for over 30 years. A wartime veteran, John served in the Navy during WWII and the Korean War.

John enjoyed many hobbies, which included hunting, fishing, and digging for Indian artifacts. One of his discoveries of a cache near the Tennessee/Tombigbee waterway led to the archaeology department of Mississippi State naming the find “The Sanders Site.”

John was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church in Columbus, MS and also served on the Board of Directors for the Salvation Army.

There will be a graveside service at 1:30 pm Monday January 5, 2015 at the Harperville Mississippi Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the First United Methodist Church 602 Main Street Columbus, MS. 30701.
