John L. Ponder, 84, passed away Thursday, February 5, 2015 at Miss. Baptist Medical Center in Jackson. Visitation is Sunday February 8, 2015 from 1:30-3 pm at Christ Congregational Church in Johns with services following at 3 pm. Interment will follow in Johns Cemetery.
Mr. Ponder was a lifelong resident of Rankin County and a member of Christ Congregational Church where he had served as a Deacon. He retired from Marquette Cement Plant after 30 years of service and later worked at Whitfield State Hospital. Mr. Ponder was lovingly known by his nieces and nephews as “Uncle Winnie” and will be greatly missed by all his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Jewel Ponder of Brandon; daughters, Janie Keyes (Chuck) of Madison and Margaret Sullivan (Frank) of Fredericksburg, VA; step-children, Paulette Dyess (Neal) of Pelahatchie, Shirley Walker (Thomas) of Mendenhall and Mike Brown (Linda) of Pearl; brother, Mike Ponder of Brandon; 2 grandchildren and 1 great- grandchild; 6 step-grandchildren, 12 step-great grandchildren and 1 step great- great grandchild and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Ponder was preceded in death by his first wife, Mrs. Willie Jean Ponder in 1994.
The family would like to say a special “thank you” to all the nurses and nurses aids on the 5th floor of Baptist Hospital and to Dr. Cleveland, Dr. McGee, Dr. Reynolds and Dr. Morris for all their care and compassion in taking care of Mr. Ponder.
