It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Johnnie Katherine Chapman Carter. She was born on May 18, 1939, at the Chapman family home in Hickory, MS and passed away September 4, 2023, at home in Brandon, MS surrounded by her loved ones.
Johnnie was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She married the love of her life, Charles Floyd Carter, Jr., in 1961 and together they raised three wonderful children. Johnnie was a caring and compassionate woman who dedicated most of her life to helping others as a nurse. Her selfless nature and warm smile brought comfort to all those who were fortunate to know her.
Johnnie was the backbone of our family, always there with a listening ear, wise words, and a comforting mother’s embrace. She was a pillar of strength and a source of inspiration to us all. Her love and devotion to her family was unmatched, and her presence will be sorely missed as well as her fantastic cooking.
She was predeceased by her husband Charles in November 2019 and daughter-in-law, Casey Simmons Carter in 2013. She is survived by her three children Robert “Carl” Carlton Carter (Jennifer) of Madison, MS., Kathy Carter Zachary (Mike) of Laurel, MS and Charles Kevin Carter of Olive Branch, MS. She also leaves five grandchildren, who she adored (Mia Carter, Justin Zachary (Madison), Taylor Zachary, Jorja Carter, and Reagan Carter as well as a great-grandson Carter Lane Zachary with another one due in November.
A graveside service will be held for family and close friends in Hickory, MS at 10:30AM on Friday, September 8th at New Fellowship Baptist Church Cemetery, 161 County Road 2422, Hickory, MS, 39332. Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, MS is handling arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to New Fellowship Baptist Church in Johnnie’s name. There are so many people, long-time neighbors, friends, and our hospice nurses to thank during this emotional journey. You know who you are, and WE LOVE EACH ONE OF YOU! We express our heartfelt thanks for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time.
