Joseph Melton Merchant, died on his 87th birthday, Sun., Jan. 6, 2013, at the VA Medical Center in Jackson, MS. Visitation was held Mon., Jan. 7, 2013, from 5 p.m.-8:30 p.m. at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, MS, and from 10 a.m.-10:45 a.m. Tues. Jan. 8, 2013, at the Branch Baptist Church in Morton with funeral services at 11 a.m. and burial in the church cemetery. Mr. Ryan Merchant, Rev. Gayden Harrell, Rev. Suzanne Vinson, Rev. Michael Giles and Rev. Timothy Phillipson officiated the services. Pallbearers were David Irby, Paul Irby, Daniel Merchant, Ryan Merchant, Kenny Robertson and David Stovall.
Mr. Merchant was a native and longtime resident of the Branch Community of Morton and a former resident of Pearl. He was a member of Branch Baptist Church where he was active in church ministries and was a former member of Paul Truitt Memorial Baptist Church in Pearl. Mr. Merchant served in the U.S. Navy Signal Corp from Nov. 1943 to April 1946. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Mr. Merchant received a diploma in May 1948 from Cook’s Radio School in Jackson and retired from WLBT after more than 30 years of service.
Mr. Merchant is survived by his daughter, Lynn Stovall (Ron) of Pearl, MS; his son, Roger Merchant (Teresa) of Morton; five sisters, Vivian Still of West Monroe, LA; Rosie Byrd of Huntsville, AL; Lovell Smith of La Place, LA; Opal Irby of Morton; and Carolyn Lawrence of Brandon; two brothers, Grady Carl Merchant of Crystal Springs and Mark Merchant of Brandon; six grandchildren, Ryan Merchant (Clair), Daniel Merchant, Suzanne Stovall Vinson (Richard), David Stovall, Amanda Stovall Loomis (Tony) and Micki Stovall Posey (Ty); and four great grandchildren, Joseph Vinson, Zachary Loomis, Katie Loomis and Audrey Posey. He was preceded in death by his wife Etoile Peagler Merchant in 2002; three brothers, James Merchant, Willie Merchant, Wilbur Merchant; and a great grandchild, Micah-Jo Merchant.
