Mr. Joseph Lee Wheeler, age 90, of Springfield community in Morton, MS went home to eternal glory Monday, November 23, 2015 at the University Medical Center in Jackson, MS. Funeral Service will be held at the Springfield Baptist Church in Morton on Friday, November 27, 2015 at 2:00 pm with Bro. Don Wilson and Bro. Marty Wilson presiding. Visitation will be Thursday, November 26, 2015 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Morton with a visitation also on Friday, November 27, 2015 from 12:00 to 1:00 pm at Ott and Lee in Morton prior to the service. Interment will be at the Springfield Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Joe Wheeler was born on January 15, 1925 to his parents Mr. Henry and Ebbie "Hammond" Wheeler in Drew, MS. He was a member of the military unit which at the time was called the "3704th Army Air Forces Base Unit" on the Keesler Air Force Base. One of his favorite organizations that he enjoyed being a part of is the VFW of Morton. Mr. Jody, as some called him, was a man who loved the military men and women and was very patriotic when it came to his country. Some of the things he loved to do were woodworking, building things, singing and playing the guitar. He also was a big story teller, and he loved watching the humming birds flying around.
Mr. Joe was a member of the Springfield Baptist Church in Morton, and he loved and cherished his church family and his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, very much. Mr. Joe Had a soft spot in his heart for babies and children. He was known around the church family as the "Candy Man". He gave each child a piece of candy along with a hug and a big smile. He was fortunate enough to marry the love of his life and he took his job of taking care of his Queen very seriously. He cherished her with all of his heart. He was a lover of people with quiet a magnetic personality and always a smile on his handsome face. He never met a stranger and if you were around him very long, you felt like you had known him your whole life. Mr. Joe loved life to its fullest including the love of food, coffee, cornbread and milk, biscuits and country ham, and catfish from Jerry's. He and his Queen bonded with the folks at Cracker Barrel of Pearl, MS and they all knew them when they arrived. Not only did he love to eat food, but he loved to cook, too! He was the breakfast maker of the biscuits, sausage and gravy and he was famous for his fried okra throughout the Springfield community.
Mr. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Ebbie "Hammond" Wheeler; his son, Joseph Lee Wheeler Jr.; and all of his brothers and sisters.
He was survived by his wife of 69 years, Mrs. Dorothy "Cooper" Wheeler; his daughters, Charlene (Bill) Fowler of Brandon, MS, and Jo Ann (Karl) Landreneau of Baton Rouge, LA; grandchildren, Christopher Fowler, Blair Landerneau, Amy Fowler, Brooke Landreneau Fair, Joey Fowler; great grandchildren, Cooper Fowler, Brice Fowler, Jolee Fair, Kaitlyn Fowler, Jadee Beth Fair, Emily Landreneau, Chloe Landreneau.
Serving as pallbearers are Christopher Fowler, Blair Landreneau, Daniel Napp, Carl Woolery, Jason Frith, and James Sonnenberg.
