Love in Action

9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. 11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

Julia Sims was Ms. Hospitality.  Julia Sims was not only a loving and wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother; she was a great teacher and an even better friend.  Julia Sims loved teaching and being a teacher.  Even after her retirement she substituted whenever the school called for her assistance.  Julia supported the Pearl Pirate Band long after her children graduated high school.

Julia (Granny) epitomized Love in Action.  From the children she taught for many years, to her children, her neighbors and church family, Julia Sims cared and made sure they were never hungry, cold or without what they needed.  Often time, she would not acknowledge that she was the one giving the needed food, jackets or school supplies.  Her motto was to do something nice for someone everyday.  She even did this while in rehab and in the hospital.

Julia Sims loved to feed her family and friends.  She was famous for her banana pudding, peach cobbler and homemade soups.   She loved to fill her freezer so she could give it away.

Julia played piano and loved music. Julia was involved in various church ministries such as Vacation Bible School, Benevolence Committee and the Harvest Festival.

Julia attended what is now known as the University of Southern Mississippi.  There she met the love of her life, Coburn Sims and obtained a degree in science education.  After graduation, Coburn and Julia moved to Jackson and then to Pearl to establish their home and rear two children.  The flexibility of teaching afforded Julia the time she wanted to be with her children after school and to volunteer in all of their activities.  She was mom to many on Dawn Drive whose parents worked all day and in the summers.  After retirement, Julia loved being involved in her grandchildren’s lives by attending as many events and activities that she could.

Julia’s beloved husband died 3 ½ months ago and Julia was looking forward to reuniting with Coburn again.  While we mourn her not being with us, we her family love her and are happy she got to where she was going.  Rest in Peace Julia Ann Herrin Sims.
