Katie Bell Crook

Brandon, MS

Mrs. Katie Bell Walker Crook, age 96, passed away peacefully on Thursday January 16, 2014 with her family at her side. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:30am Saturday, January 18, 2014 at Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Brandon with the interment to follow in the Vaiden Cemetery at 3:00pm. Visitation will be held Saturday from 10:00 until 11:15am at Ott and Lee funeral home in Brandon.

Katie was born in the Clifton Community near Forkville, MS to William M. and Martha Bell Walker on May 20, 1917. She graduated from beauty school and worked as a stylist at the Vaiden Beauty shop. While in Vaiden, Katie met Tommie and they were married on December 5, 1948. Katie was a homemaker and the proud mother to her daughter Linda. Tommie’s job took them to Indianola, Starkville, Mobile, and New Orleans. While in New Orleans, Katie was pre-school Sunday School teacher with Linda. After years in New Orleans, Katie and Tommie moved to Brandon to retire. Katie was a charter member of Brandon Baptist Church where she sang in the senior adult choir and was a member of the Young at Heart.

Katie was known as “The Lady with the yard” to everyone in her neighborhood. Katie had a gift to make any plant blossom into a beautiful creation. She loved to spend time with her neighbors and friends as they would stop to enjoy her yard and a sweet conversation. But more than Katie loved her yard and her friends, she loved her family. Katie was so proud of her daughter Linda who lovingly cared for her mother so that she could enjoy her home and yard. Linda and Katie had a special bond that few are privileged to share. Katie had a way to make each of her grandchildren think they were her favorite. She lit up when her great-grand children would come for a visit.

Mrs. Crook was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Tommie F. Crook; her brothers, Howard Walker and Bert Walker; and sisters Louise Walker Duncan, and Christine Walker Measells. She is survived by her daughter, Linda C. Dutiel (Randy) of Brandon, MS. Mrs. Crook was Mamaw to her granddaughter Kerry Arender (Jeff) and two grandsons, Kevin Dutiel and Kyle Dutiel. Katie was proud to be the great-grandmother to John Austin Arender and Jane Claire Arender, all of Brandon, MS. Mrs. Crook is also survived by a sister-in-law, Mary Sessums Walker of Forkville, MS and numerous nieces and nephews. Other special friends included her many neighbors and church friends. The family would like to say a special thank you to Reverend Bernard Nail, Audrey Rhinewalt, Ashley Montgomery, Sandra Powell-Thompson, Blanche Cloud, Rhonda Box, Miss Mabel, Baptist Hospital staff, Hospice Ministries, Dr. Ken Morris, and Dr. Robert McGee for their compassionate care of Miss Katie.

Memorials may be made to the Brandon Baptist Church building fund.
