Funeral services for Mr. Lavon Smith were conducted on Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at 4:00 pm from the Ott & Lee Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Ronnie Spears and Bro. Jerry Holmes officiating. Music was provided by Bro. Bill Myers. Interment followed in the Groveton Presbyterian Cemetery under the direction of Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Morton. Visitation was held Tuesday, August 23, 2016 from 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm and Wednesday from 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm at the funeral home.
Lavon Smith was born November 25, 1933 at Branch, a twin son to his parents: Huston and Lois Smith. He passed away Monday, August 22, 2016 at his home at the age of 82. He was a member of the Groveton Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Branch where he served as a deacon and elder for many years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister: Christine Smith; and two brothers: Jim Smith and Myrtis Smith.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years: Mary Frances Smith of Branch; son: Thomas (Tammy) Smith of Etowah, TN; daughter: Judy (Joe) Thompson of Branch; grandchildren: Nicole (Jamie) Price of Pearl; Cory (Raegan) Smith and Josh Smith, all of Brandon; great-grandchildren: Hunter, Zoe, Landon, Swade, and Annlea; twin sister: Lavern Ivy of Branch; one sister-in-law: Pauline Smith of Branch; daughter-in-law: Pam Smith, mother of his grandchildren; and his god-daughter: Gracie Wooten; and his best friend: Leon Harrell.
Lavon spent many years in construction, sometimes traveling across the Southern United States, and later in the Brandon and Morton Area. One of his greatest loves was his gardening, growing vegetables to share with his family and friends. He was always known for his quality of the tomatoes that he harvested and shared.
Pallbearers were: Ronnie Ivy, Rusty Ivy, Richard Ivy, Robbie Wooten, Dan Wooten and Ronnie McCurdy.
Honorary Pallbearers were: Rita Withers, Tommy Harrell, Butch Lingle, Leon Harrell and Sol Davis, the Elders of Groveton Presbyterian Church.
Memorials may be made in his name to Groveton Presbyterian Church.
