Leo Johnson Jr.
Ludlow, Mississippi
Mr. Leo Johnson Jr. passed away Saturday, June 6, 2015 at the age of 91. He was a lifelong resident of the Ludlow and Coal Bluff communities in western Scott County.
He served his country during WWII in the United States Navy aboard the destroyer, The USS Anthony, as a Radio Engineer. He received several ribbons and awards for his service and was granted an Honorable Discharge in 1946.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Lorena Presley Johnson, his wife, Lela of 64 years, and sister, Bessie Marie Measels.
Mr. Johnson leaves behind his son, Lonnie C. Johnson, former State Representative of Rankin County and wife, Lydia of Asheville, NC; three grandchildren, Russ Johnson and wife, Presley of Lindale, TX, Amanda Mitchell and husband, Darrell of Mansfield, TX and Brian Johnson and wife, Jennifer of Asheville, NC; six great grandchildren, Hailey, Mary Stewart, Ainsley, Peyton, Ana Russell and Landon.
Mr. Johnson was a founding member of the Riverbend Missionary Baptist Church in the Coal Bluff community. He retired from Sperry Vickers in 1984 as a machinest building hydraulic pumps for the successful landing on the Moon in 1969. He and his family raised Polled Hereford cattle and he was an active member of the Mississippi Polled Hereford Association. As the grandchildren grew they became involved in showing their cattle and winning many ribbons and championships at the Dixie National and State Fairs each year.
Visitation will be Friday, June 12, 2015 beginning at 9:45 a.m. and the funeral to follow at 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel of Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Morton MS. Burial will follow in the Ludlow Cemetery. Rev. Chris Vowell and Bro. Bobby Tagert will officate the services. Special music will be played by pianist, Linda Nichols and vocal selections by, Bill Rucker. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Morton.
Pallbearers include: Russ Johnson, Brian Johnson, Darrell Mitchell, Barney Measels, Jimmy Presley and CL Presley. Honorary Pallbearers are Rep. Clarence Pierce, Dr. Steve Green, Claude Oliver Fitzhugh, Charles Latham and Hubert Shoemaker.
