Lillian Batte Thornton

May 8, 1933 — March 31, 2025

Gulfport, MS

On March 31, 2025 Lillian Batte Thornton joined her beloved husband of 73 years, John Thornton, in Heaven. Their extraordinary bond, forged through decades of love, devotion, and shared life, is now reunited in eternal peace. Visitation will be held Saturday, April 5th from 10-11 am at High Hill Baptist Church in Raleigh, MS, with a graveside service beginning at 11.

Lillian was born in Raleigh, Mississippi, at either 11:59 pm or midnight, with her parents not agreeing if she was born on May 7 or 8, 1933, to Beuel and Lela Batte. She lived to be 91, surpassing the longevity of any other member of her Batte family tree.

She and John began their life together when they married at the courthouse square in Forest, Mississippi. Together, they ran the Pure Oil service station in Raleigh before moving to Gulfport. Their marriage was a shining example of love and partnership.

After relocating to Gulfport, Lillian worked at what is now Bayou View Middle School, serving as the cafeteria manager. She took great pride in her work and formed lasting relationships with students and staff alike. Upon retiring, Lillian and John enjoyed splitting their time between Gulfport and Raleigh, often spending summers and weekends there when their grandchildren were young.

Lillian had a generous spirit and a talent for crochet. She was honored by the Biloxi VA for donating over 1,500 lap throws to veterans over the years, she also donated her throws to retirement homes and the Woman’s Resouce Center. Known as "Mamaw" to many, she found her greatest joy in being surrounded by family and friends. She delighted in the lives of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, cherishing every moment spent with them.

Lillian is survived by her devoted daughter, Theresa Richardson (Russell “Rusty”), and her son, David Thornton; her son-in-law, William “Billy” Miller; five grandchildren: Melanie Korniotatkis, Ronald “Ronny” (Meghan) Richardson, Randall “Randy” (Marcella) Richardson, Sarah (Dan) Harden, and Delaney Thornton; and four great-grandchildren: Lillian “Lila” Richardson, Barrett Richardson, Rowan Richardson, and Gus Harden. She is also survived by numerous cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Thornton; two daughters, Cathy Miller and Deborah Gallant; her parents, Beuel and Lela Batte; and her siblings.

Lillian’s life was a testament to love, service, and family. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her.

The family would also like to thank the staff of Vital Care Hospice for their support during this time.

In lieu of flowers the family asks for donations be made to the High Hill Cemetery Fund c/o Ruby Gaye McNeil, 140 SCR 37-6 Raleigh, MS 39153.
