Lloyd "Bulldog" Burton left the jobsite for the final time on March 11th, 2021, promoted to master builder in the Heavenly realms. His material list now consists of gold, precious jewels, and pearls. Born August 11, 1930, in Webster County near Eupora, MS to Winfred Knight and Clara Hood Burton. A longtime resident of Brandon, MS, Lloyd resided in Gulfport, MS in recent years to be near his daughters.
Lloyd attended Central High School in Jackson, MS where he earned the nickname "Bulldog", for his dogged tenacity on the football field despite his short stature. Upon graduation, he served in the US Army. Martha Lila Short Burton, his high school sweetheart, became his bride in 1951. Together they set out on the adventure of life. Having learned construction from his father, Lloyd began his career in the home building industry. He and Martha took the leap into their own family business within a few years. For over 50 years they successfully owned and operated residential and commercial construction, real estate brokerage and land development businesses. Lloyd would oversee construction in the field, while Martha managed the office. Thousands of homes in Jackson and the surrounding areas are quality "Burton Built Homes". Lloyd was instrumental as a member of the local, state, and national home builders' associations, where he served in every office, spearheaded committees, and represented a strong voice for the industry. He was also active in the local and national association of Realtors as well as the Multiple Listing Service of Jackson. Lloyd and Martha enjoyed the large network of lifelong friends generated by their business affiliations and traveled extensively participating in conventions and meetings supporting and promoting the industry they loved. Those who worked for and with them over the years would be the first to say Lloyd operated his businesses with the utmost integrity and considered each of them to be extended family.
Lloyd knew his Lord and savior from an early age and was active in the United Methodist Church throughout his life. He was a member of Brandon First United Methodist Church.
Family was of such great importance to Lloyd, he ended up employing all his children, not only because he believed in them, but so they would not move far away. As a family, there were travels, cruises, conventions, celebrations, holidays, potlucks, and anything he could think of to bring the family together. He and Martha loved treating the grandkids to special summer vacations yearly. He loved his precious wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren immensely and generously. As a grandfather, he was most proud to be called "BooBoo". Lloyd became well known for his rendition of "Just A Bowl Of Butterbeans", singing it all over the world. He embraced life and took every opportunity to enjoy and share joy along the way.
Lloyd is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a brother and three sisters. Left to cherish his memory are a son, Jimmy Burton; two daughters, Linda (Don) Halle and Beverly Burton; grandchildren, Alyssia (Brandon) Carlisle, Kayla (Manuel) Bowden, Lila Burton and Austin (Sarah) Wilkinson; great- grandchildren, Jordan Healy, Ashton Healy, Colbie Wilkinson, Alexis Wilkinson and Luca Bowden; two sisters, Derline Atkins and Annie (George) Pollock and numerous nieces and nephews.
