Lucille Moore
Morton
Mrs. Lucille Whatley Moore, aged 105, died Tuesday, July 2, at Lakeland Rehabilitation Center in Jackson, finishing well a full life on earth and culminating in one final adventure, her own “Trip to Bountiful,” in which she returned home to reconnect with her first love, the people of Morton, where she spent over 80 years of her life. Visitation was held Friday, July 5, from 5-8 PM at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Morton. The funeral was held Saturday, July 6, at 2 PM at Morton United Methodist Church with burial following at the Morton City Cemetery.
Mrs. Moore was born in Rayville, Louisiana, on June 6, 1908. After graduating from high school there in 1925, she moved to Morton where she worked as a saleslady. On May 13, 1928, she married McNary Moore. Their only child, Mary Elinor, was born on June 23, 1932. Her passions were singing, teaching children in Sunday school, sewing, needlework, travelling, cooking, playing card and word games, gardening, the Braves, spoiling her grandchildren and visiting shut-ins as an extension of her love for her church and community. She was Grand Worthy Matron in the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the Morton Climbers Club. Though she spent much of the last nine years in Wheaton, Illinois, living with her grandson and his family, she remained an ambassador for her church and the city that she loved to the very end, asking those she met throughout the country if they had ever been to Morton and declaring that she was Methodist and only visiting in Illinois.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, McNary Moore; her daughter of 71 years, Mary Elinor Comfort; and her siblings Hugh Whatley, Mary Turpin and Eunice Gill. She is survived by her youngest sister, Nancy Elaine Milholland; her grandson, Jerry McNary Comfort and his wife, Sally Ann of Wheaton, Illinois; her great grandson, Cole Bartee Comfort; her granddaughter, Elinor Shawn Morgan and her husband, Jerry, of Brandon; and many adored nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Dennis Bienski, David McKay, Joe Keith McKay, Bob Milholland, David French, Reggie Robertson and Eric McKay. Honorary pallbearer was Howard Herring.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that gifts be made to the Morton United Methodist Church building fund.
