Mack Greer

Daniel McKennith (Mack) Greer passed away early on the morning of Nov. 5, 2024.

He lived the whole of his life in Forest, Mississippi, attending Ephesus Baptist Church for most of his life and becoming a Christian when he was a young man. He graduated from Ringgold High School in 1954 and then went to East Central Junior College, in Decatur, before returning to Forest.

For years, he sold cars at Lee-Gray Chevrolet. He owned and ran Mack’s Fairway Foods, a small grocery store that made the best breakfast sandwiches around. He then worked as a meat inspector with the Mississippi Dept. of Agriculture until he retired, only to continue working at Ott & Lee Funeral Home for more than a decade. His gentle demeanor there was an asset and comfort to others.

Mack could grow anything — from yellow angel trumpet flowers to butterbeans, purple-hulled peas and corn. He was a believer in soaker hoses. He was also a woodworker and created all sorts of beautiful pieces through the years.

He was an incredible animal trainer. His dogs were the best behaved dogs around. He was also an award-winning quarter horse trainer. On his horse, Holly, he won many competitions, belt buckles and trophies.

He was organized. Everything had its place. He was a dapper dresser and enjoyed wearing a thick gold chain around his neck. He kept a spotlessly clean car.

He loved pound cake and the incredible coconut pies his wife made. He did not tolerate fools, but like the pound cake and pie he adored, he was sweet — the sweetest fellow around.

He is survived by his wife, Doris, of 66 years, whom he met when she was a waitress at Peyton Eady’s Cafe in 1956. He saw her inside the restaurant and drove around it three times to get a better look. Eventually, he gave her a ride home. When he got home that night, he told his family that he had met the prettiest girl in the world. They were married within a year.

He is also survived by his daughter Angie Stephens and her husband, Steve, of Little Rock, Arkansas. Mack was a devoted father from the day she was born. His was a face of pure contentment when Angie was home practicing her piano.

He is also survived by his sister Hazel Squires, his sister Nelda Risher, and more nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, great-great nieces and great-great nephews than anyone can track.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Natie Grover Grannison Greer and Mattie Sephton Greer, his siblings, Alline Benton (Kent), Preston Greer (Stella), Andrew Greer (Cassie), Herman Greer (Grace), Cpl. Leslie Franklin Greer, Helen Russell Conn (Paul) and Billy Joe Greer.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until 11:30 Thursday, Nov. 7 at Ephesus Baptist Church in Forest, with services following at noon. Bro. Robin Risher, Bro Chris Harrison, and Bro Gary Morris will officiate under the direction of Ott & Lee Funeral Home.

Pallbearers are Rusty Risher, Jason Hurdle, Justin Hurdle, Billy Perritt, Roger Bell, and Ben Stewart.

OTT & LEE Funeral Home of Forest is honored to serve the Greer family.
