Mae was born March 25, 1936 to Catheron & Samuel David Dantzler in Drew, Mississippi. She attended Drew High School and went on to graduate from Delta State University in 1959. She pledged to Beta Sigma Phi sorority while at Delta State and continued her commitment to her sorority by serving the Xi Alpha Chapter of Jackson Mississippi until her death. While at Delta State she met James (Jimmy) Harold Hazzard. They married on September 5, 1959 and moved to Cleveland, MS. Their four sons, James Jr, Curtis, Carl and Tim were all born in Cleveland, MS. After their births, Jimmy and Mae had the opportunity to live in many places around the country: Cleveland, MS; Greenville MS; Meridian MS; New Orleans LA; Fort Washington PA; Clinton MS and finally settled down in Brandon MS in 1986. Through all of her travels she always loved Mississippi and her Southern hospitality and friendship towards others was extraordinary.

In 2004 and after twenty years of dedication, Mae retired from Watkins, Ludlam, Winter & Stennis Law Firm as a Legal Secretary. Upon retirement, she and Jim moved to Miami for 2 years before he retired and they moved back to Brandon, MS. During their retirement years they were able to enjoy the lives they worked so hard to build. They were never apart and serve as a true inspiration of what the sanctity of marriage should be.

Mae’s hobbies included her sorority, playing Bunko, watching football and never missing a Braves game on TV. She was a dedicated Mississippi State fan and loved having her family and friends around her. She was an active member of Flowood Baptist Church in Flowood, MS.

Mae is preceded in death by her parents, brother, Sam Dantzler and her sister, Catheron Ferguson. She is survived by her husband, James Hazzard, her sons James Hazzard Jr. (Mary) of Panama City, FL, Curtis Hazzard (Sarah) of Panama City, FL, Carl Hazzard of Starkville, MS, and Tim Hazzard (Shelley) of Brandon, MS.
