Margaret “Lynn” Shewmaker Strickland passed away on Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at Hospice Ministries after a lengthy battle against early onset Alzheimer’s disease. Visitation will be held Friday, April 8, 2016 from 5 until 8 pm at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon and again on Saturday, April 9, 2016 from 10 am until the 11 am Service at First Baptist Church, East Campus, 309 S. College St., Brandon, MS. Dr. Gene Henderson and Dr. Kevin Cooper will officiate. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Gardens.
Lynn was born in Birmingham, Alabama on September 11, 1956 to Margaret Dale Shewmaker and to the late Maiben Lopez Shewmaker. She attended Banks High School and graduated in 1974. She attended McWhorter School of Pharmacy at Samford University where she met her future husband, Ricky Strickland. They were married on April 26, 1980 at Rhuhama Baptist Church. After their marriage they made their home in Brandon, Mississippi.
Lynn was a Christian. She made her profession of faith during her teenage years. She was a faithful and active member of First Baptist Church of Brandon. Even as Alzheimer’s disease robbed her of many things, it could not take away her love of Jesus, trust in his will, and faith. She continued to share her faith with people and their need of Jesus.
Lynn was known as a kind, gentle, faithful wife, mother, friend, and daughter, to all who met her. She had a beautiful smile. Her most important job was being a good wife and taking care of her boys. If you met Lynn, you loved her.
Lynn worked at St. Dominic’s Hospital pharmacy in the early years of her career. Beginning in 1992, she worked as a part-time retail pharmacist in many locations across central Mississippi. She continued to do this until her illness forced her into retirement in July 2009.
Lynn is survived by her husband of 36 years, Ricky Strickland; her sons, James Samuel Strickland of Brandon and Daniel Richard Strickland (Amber) of Brandon; her mother, Margaret Dale Shewmaker and one sister, Charlotte Shewmaker McCaslin, both of Trussville, Alabama; her mother-in-law, Georgia Strickland of Magee, MS; sister- in- law, Vickie Cole (David) of Brandon; brother-in-law, Randy Strickland (Glenda) of Magee and two nephews and three nieces.
We would like to thank Lynn’s caregivers, Samantha Partick and Darlene Adams for the laughter, care and support they provided Lynn. Also Hospice Ministries of Ridgeland for their care during the last six weeks of her life.
We will miss our precious Lynn, the warmth of her smile, the kindness in her heart, but we are reminded that she now resides safely in the arms of Jesus the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Hebrews 12:1, “Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.” Lynn is now cheering us on to the finish line.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Brandon Building Fund; the McWhorter School of Pharmacy at Sanford University; or the Alzheimer’s Association.
