Martha Lila Burton
Gulfport, MS

Martha Lila Short Burton left the arms of her loving family on July 28, 2015, and was welcomed into the arms of Jesus. Born February 9, 1934 in Corinth, MS, she was the daughter of Marie Sedberry Short and Willard Doyle Short.

Martha was a longtime resident of Brandon, MS, and along with her husband, resided with her daughters in Gulfport, MS for the past year. She was a 1952 graduate of Central High School, and married her high school sweetheart, Lloyd “Bulldog” Burton, in 1951. Together they built and operated their family construction business and real estate office for over 50 years, Martha managing the office and Lloyd out in the field. She and “Bulldog” loved participating in the activities of the Home Builders Association and the Home Builders Auxiliary. The meetings and conventions they attended all over the United States provided some of the best times of their lives, and the opportunity to build a network of lifelong friendships. Martha served the Auxiliary in every local office including President and Area Vice President of the National Auxiliary. She loved the Lord and was active in the United Methodist Church throughout her life. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Brandon, MS. Over the years she taught children’s Sunday school, was a Women’s Circle leader, enjoyed art classes at church and penned many cards of joy and concern to church family members. She was a Girl Scout leader for many years, and took great joy in shaping young lives. She also enjoyed garden club, dancing, traveling, reading and fine dining. Martha radiated a vibrant, energetic, bubbling personality, and kept a perpetual smile on her face, always cheerful, always positive, always kind and caring to those she knew and met. Her smile truly revealed her character.

Family was Martha’s life. She adored her husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and they adored her. She made time for all of them. Nothing put a bigger smile on her face than hearing them affectionately call her “Bebo”. She and “Bulldog” enjoyed traveling with friends to destinations all over the world, but her fondest memories are of those spent vacationing with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. With family in tow, “Bebo” and “Booboo” took summer trips on cruises, to theme parks, the mountains, the beach, Alaska, Hawaii and locations all over the United States. Spending precious time with family and friends was the joy of her life.

Martha is preceded in death by her parents. She leaves to cherish her memory, her loving husband; two daughters, Linda (Don) Halle and Beverly Burton; a son, Jimmy Burton; grandchildren, Alyssia (Brandon) Carlisle, Kayla Burton, Lila Burton and Austin (Sarah) Wilkinson; great grandchildren, Jordan Healy and Ashton Healy; a brother, Dr. Louie (Mary) Short; two sisters-in-law, Derline Atkins and Annie (George) Pollock and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm on Sunday, August 2, 2015 and services at 11:00 am on Monday, August 3, 2015 with visitation beginning at 10:00 am at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, MS.
