Mattie Culpepper

Funeral services for Mrs. Mattie Ola Culpepper will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Sunday, October 15, 2017 from the Ephesus Baptist Church with Dr. Jim Everett, Rev. Chris Harrison, and Dr. Joe Truhett officiating.
Music for the service will be provided by Mrs. Janet Everett and Mrs. Joyce Everett.
Interment will follow in the Ephesus Cemetery under the direction of Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Forest.
Visitation will be from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at Ott & Lee Funeral Home and on Sunday from 1:00 pm – 1:45 pm at Ephesus Baptist Church.
Mattie Ola Culpepper was born in Scott County on April 1, 1915 and completed her earthly journey at Lackey Memorial Hospital on October 13, 2017 at the age of 102.
Mrs. Culpepper was a lifelong resident of Scott County and a graduate of Ringgold School where she was valedictorian of her class. As shared by her daughter, she and her late husband, W.L., were both graduates of the class and worked in the field on the farm in the morning time, then walked to school later on in the day. She had a strong work ethic and determination that will be remembered for generations to come. She was a retired employee of Fred’s Department Store.
A devout prayer warrior and Christian matriarch of the community, Mrs. Mattie Ola had a strong faith in the Lord, a genuine love for her family, and set a true example before others. A simple woman, who enjoyed crocheting and sewing, cooking for her family, gardening and growing flowers were a few things that brought her great pleasure. Her love for others was portrayed in her actions as she found great joy in keeping her grandchildren when they came along, as well as visiting the elderly and helping others when there was a need. At the time of her death, she was the oldest member of Ephesus Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday School teacher. She and her late husband were avid readers and students of the Bible hosting many Bible studies in their home over the years. She will be missed by those who knew her but her legacy will live on in the lives of those she touched for years to come.
She is preceded in death by her husband: W.L. Culpepper; her parents: Lowry and Allie Hawkins Harrison; her brothers: Percy, James, Lyles, Larther, Austin, Will, and an infant brother; and two sisters: Sally Johnston and Nellie Weger.
Survivors include her daughter: Carol (Roquel) Barber of Forest; two grandchildren: Cara Barber of Forest and Chris (Katie) Barber of Carrollton, TX; two-great-grandchildren: Evie and Maggie Barber of Carrollton, TX; one sister: Mrs. Mary Ellie Hollingsworth of Lake; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Servings as pallbearers will be Lamar Harrison, Shawn Harris, Devin Cooper, Billy Everett, Thomas Truhett, and David Tadlock.
