Funeral services for Mrs. Mattie Ruth Evans will be conducted on Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 P.M., December 30, 2014 from the Ott & Lee Funeral Home Chapel in Forest with the Rev. Ken McLemore officiating. Music for the service will be provided by Mrs. Kimberly Edmonds, soloist, and Mrs. Nona Renaud, pianist. Burial will follow in the Pine Ridge Cemetery at Lawrence under the direction of Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Forest.

Visitation will be Monday evening, December 29, 2014 from 5 P.M. until 7 P.M. at Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Forest.

Mrs. Evans, age 99, a resident of the Golden Living Center in Meridian and a longtime resident of Lake, passed away Saturday, December 27, 2014. She was a native of Leake County, born January 5, 1915 to her parents Robert Bradley and Lucy Bell Ivy Freeney. Her formal school years were spent at Freeney High School, Holmes Community College, East Central Community College, and the University of Southern Mississippi. Mrs. Mattie Ruth was very community minded and was noted as serving as the only female mayor of Lake, where she served two terms. She spent over thirty years in the educational field teaching children at the Choctaw Indian School at Conehatta. Favorite past times were cooking and sewing. She also enjoyed tending to her flowers, as she was a longtime member of the Rose Garden Club at Lake. She was a member of the Lake Christian Church.

She is survived by her two daughters: Lucy Monk and her husband, Kenneth of Lake, and Elma Dean McDonald and her husband, Willard of Butler, AL; one brother: Glenn Freeney, and his wife Dean of Jackson; nine grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Elmer Evans; one daughter: Joanne Nichols; one grandson: Dr. Kevin Nichols; four brothers and two sisters.

Serving as pallbearers are Evan McDonald, Taylor Nichols, Wyman Reece, Stacy Cummings, Joel Monk, Stacy Monk, Ken Nichols, and Shane Vick.

Serving as honorary pallbearers are: Brandon Reece, Nick Reece, Dylan Nichols, Andrew Nichols, Page McDonald, Ryan Monk, Reagan Monk, and Caleb Monk.
