Max Murphree Cole, 84, passed away April 7, 2015, at Merit Health (formerly Crossgates River Oaks) in Brandon following an extended illness. Visitation will be from 10am until 11am Thursday at Ott & Lee Funeral Home, 1360 West Government Street, Brandon, followed by the funeral service at 11am. Dr. Keith Grubbs, pastor of Park Place Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Pleasant Ridge cemetery in Houston at 3pm Thursday.
Born in Charleston, MS in 1931 to the late Walter Gray Cole and Annie Loise Murphree Cole, Max and his family moved to Houston when he was a youngster. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth (Liz); a daughter, Deborah Karen Watts, her husband Samuel Thomas Watts, grandson, John Barry Watts of Brandon; brother, Billy Ray Cole of Lambert; “adopted” daughter and granddaughter Debbie and Danielle Walters, both of whom reside in Louisiana; sisters-in-law, Mrs. Zette Terry of Houston, Texas, and Mrs. Jean Callahan of Okolona, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Rosamond Cole, and brother, Rodney Doyle Cole
Max and Liz were married in 1952. She was the love of his life and a devoted caregiver during his illness. Max served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a highly-respected leader in state government for 37 years having served as Commissioner of Public Welfare and Deputy Director of the State Medicaid Commission. He held degrees from both Mississippi State University and Louisiana State University.
Pallbearers are Reggie Callahan, Danny Epps, Frank Little, Jason Terry, Roger Tullos and Jimmy B. Stark.
His family extends their sincere appreciation to Dr. Grubbs, Minister to Seniors Danny Epps and staff, church members and especially the Charles Roe Sunday School Class and members of Max and Liz’s Sunday School Classes for love, care, attention and prayers during the past several months. In lieu of flowers they request that donations be made in his honor to Park Place Baptist Church, 5701 Highway 80 East, Pearl, MS 39209.
