Maxine Archer Nail, after struggling two years with advanced Alzheimer’s, peacefully went to be with the Lord on February 23, 2017 at Wisteria Gardens. Visitation will be at Brandon Baptist Church on Monday, February 27th from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Monday following the visitation, with Dr. Clarence Cooper and Rev. Farley Earnest officiating. Interment will be at Crestview Memorial Gardens.
Maxine, daughter of the late Murdock and Hettie Archer of Hattiesburg, MS, was born on December 8, 1927, in Bunkie, LA. She attended William Carey College in Hattiesburg and later graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi. She married Bernard Nail in 1952 and throughout 65 years of marriage, she was a dedicated, hard-working and compassionate wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Maxine was devoted to her family and was the glue that kept them strong. With her persistent wisdom and guidance, she left a legacy among all family members. Although a stern disciplinarian, she could crack a joke and banter with the best of them. Her quick wit, playful personality and love for life were witnessed by many and will be cherished memories.
Maxine enjoyed cooking, reading, bird watching and being with family; however, it was her love and passion for children and the Lord that led her to teaching and ministering. She worked tirelessly as an elementary school teacher in LA and MS for over 30 years. Tough in the classroom, but all fun and games at recess - even jumping rope with the children - she had a tremendous impact on her students and made lifelong relationships with many of them and her fellow teachers as well.
In various churches in LA and MS, Maxine taught or led Sunday school, G.A.’s, W.M.U. and was a youth director as well. Most recently, she was a faithful and loved member of Brandon Baptist Church for 14 years, where she also taught Sunday school. Strength in family and service to the Lord -- that’s Maxine Archer Nail.
Maxine was preceded in death by daughter, Theresa Nail Jordan; brothers, Murdock Chapman Archer and C. M. Archer; and sister, Lucille Archer Toomey.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Bernard Nail; children, Jeff Nail (Nina), Pat Nail McLeod (Larry) and Daphne Nail Keene; son-in-law, Mark Jordan; grandchildren, Angie Nail Lofton (Tommy), Todd McLeod (Jill), James McLeod (Amy), Cassie McLeod, Dylan Keene (Hillary), Zach Keene, Darby Keene, Randy Jordan and Katie Jordan Phillips (Austin); and four great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Todd McLeod, James McLeod, Randy Jordan, Mark Jordan, Dylan Keene and Zach Keene.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to the Brandon Baptist Church Children’s Building Fund.
The family would like to thank the staff of Wisteria Gardens and Kindred Hospice for their love, care and compassion.
