On Thursday, January 3, 2019, Melvin “Paps” Parten, loving husband and father of three children, passed away at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland, MS.
Melvin was born on September 11, 1943, in Nanafalia, Alabama. Melvin graduated from Leroy High School (Alabama). After high school, Melvin attended East Central Junior College and went on to graduate from The University of Southern Mississippi with a B.S. in Business Administration. He spent 37 years as part of the State Farm Insurance family.
Melvin married Carol Ann Turner Parten in 1964 and they raised three children. Throughout his life Melvin was faithful in his commitment to the church and his community.
Melvin had a passion for his family. He loved being a part of his children’s lives and that of their families. Whether it was the local ballpark, a cheer competition, or flying to Cheney, Washington to watch the Bears of Central Arkansas, Paps was going to be there for his grandchildren. He also loved the woods of Franklin County and the Franklin Shell Hunting Club, where he was a member for over 45 years.
Mr. Parten is survived by his wife, Carol Parten; three children, Robin Holloway (Dave), Steve Parten (Leigh Ann), and Michael Parten; five grandchildren, Brooke Holloway, Kaitlyn Holloway, Micah Parten (Jillian), Noah Parten, and Caleb Parten; one great grandchild, Piper Parten; three sisters, Barbara Ann Woodyard, Ellen Boykin, Jean McInnis, and a brother, Albert Parten.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, January. 6, 2019, from 5pm-7pm at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, MS and on Monday, January 7, 2019, from 1pm - 1:45pm at Pinelake Church in Brandon, MS. Funeral Services are 2pm on Monday, January 7, 2019, at Pinelake Church with burial to follow at Lakeland Place Garden Park Cemetery in Brandon, MS.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Christian Education Fund of McLaurin Heights Baptist Church at 404 Pemberton Drive, Pearl, MS 39208.
