BURIAL: OLD BRANDON CEMETERY

VISITATION: 2-5 PM SUNDAY

Merle Jones East, 88, died Tuesday, September 14, 2010, at Brandon Court under the care of Providence Hospice. Visitation is 2 pm until 5 pm Sunday, September 19, 2010 at Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Brandon. Services are 10 am Monday, September 20, at Brandon Baptist Church with burial in Old Brandon Cemetery.

Mrs. East was born September 10, 1922 in the Rankin County community of Johns. She graduated form Morton High School and what is now the University of Southern Mississippi. She taught business subjects in high schools in Tylertown, Amory and Hattiesburg, and was librarian at Brandon High School until her retirement.

Mrs. East was a charter member of Brandon Baptist Church, and was active in Sunday School, Women’s Missionary Union and Young at Heart. She was a charter member of Chief Red Jacket Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, and a member of Rankin County Retired Teachers Association.

She is survived by four children: Mary Ellen DeWitt and husband, Emery of Lancaster, PA, Martha Ann Grizzle of Brandon, Betty Gene Meyer and husband, Tommy of Columbia, KY, and Dan East and wife, Jen Meyer of Lancaster, PA; nine grandchildren, and one great-grandson. Also sisters-in-law Essie Lee, Novis and Nina Jones.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert D. East; parents, Victor H. and Belle Hurst Jones and four brothers, Harold, Taylor and wife Estelle, Charley and Lynn Jones.
