Merle Miles

April 25, 1919 — January 31, 2016

Funeral services for Mrs. Merle Gertrude Miles, (formerly Goodman, nee Bowman) will be conducted at 11:00 am Wednesday, February 3, 2016 from the Ott & Lee Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Donnie Stuart officiating. Interment will follow in the Antioch Baptist Cemetery under the direction of Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Morton.


Visitation will be Tuesday, February 2, 2016 from 5:00 pm -7:00 pm and on Wednesday from 10:00 am - 10:45 am at the funeral home.


Mrs. Miles was born April 25, 1919 at Pelahatchie and passed away Sunday, January 31, 2016 at the Arrington Living Center in Collins at the age of 96.


She was a lifetime resident of this area, having been a longtime waitress at the Gulf Café at Morton, serving as a cashier at the B.C. Rogers Commissary before she served others as a homecare provider for many years. Instilled in her, a strong work ethic, because of the Great Depression childhood experience, she became the “Matriarch” of her family, at the young age of nine, at the death of her mother. She was a “headstrong” woman, as described by her daughter and grandson who enjoyed gardening and sewing as long as her health permitted. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Morton.


She is preceded in death by her husband: Mack N. Miles; two sons: Kenneth Lee Goodman and James Thomas Goodman; one grandson: James Crayton Rousell; her parents: John & Evelana Anderson Bowman; her brothers: Elton, Elmer, Crayton, and Huey; and her sister: Daisy Huff.


Survivors include her daughter: Charlotte Irene Goodman Rousell Eure and her husband: Wayne of Collins; one grandson: J. Scott Rousell and his wife: Tandy C. Byrd, of Hattiesburg; and one great-grandson: Christopher Morgan Burkes of Brandon.
