Tommy Gilbert slipped peacefully into the arms of Jesus on September 7, 2024, at the blessed age of 98.
He loved the Lord Jesus Christ, his church, his family, his community, and farm life. He was an active cattle farmer until recent months. He was a life-long resident of Scott and Smith Counties, Mississippi.
He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Norma Jean "Frosty" Grant Gilbert. She currently resides at Lackey Convalescent Home, Forest, MS. Mr. Tommy passed away across the hall from his beloved "Frosty" at the Home. He had been a resident there for a month. She always referred to Tommy as a "good man".
He is also survived by daughters Jeanne Finch (Barney), Donna Gilbert; grandchildren Hope Bell (Steven), Tommy Bishop (Brittany); great-grandchildren Jacob Bell, Ally McKee, Joshua Bell, Cooper Bell, Dolly Bishop, Daisy Bishop.
He is also survived by his brother, Weems Gilbert, and numerous special nieces and nephews.
He was born to O.T. and Myrtis Gilbert in Smith County, MS on August 27, 1926.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his 3 sisters and spouses: MarBeth Albright (Jack), Ouida Tadlock (Luther), and twin sister Jacqueline Hord (Douglas).
He was a WWII veteran, serving in the Army field artillery and occupation forces in Japan. After returning from the war, he went to Jones County Junior College where he met his wife, Frosty. He graduated from Mississippi State University with a degree in Agriculture. After college, he and his wife moved back to Smith/Scott County to begin farming and starting a family. He was a cattle farmer and commercial egg producer, providing Gilbert Eggs to the Jackson area grocery stores. He attended/served Carr United Methodist Church and Cemetery Association his entire life and held several leadership positions. He also served for many years on the Scott County Board of Education. He never retired and was still working the farm until shortly before his death.
Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 4:30-7pm at the Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Forest. A second visitation will be held Wednesday morning from 9-10am followed by the funeral service at 10 in the Ott and Lee Chapel. Burial will follow at Carr United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Rev. Eugene Banes will conduct the services. Any memorials would be greatly appreciated for Carr Church Cemetery, 15525 Highway 501, Forest, MS 39074.
Pallbearers will be: Tommy Bishop, Steven Bell, David Tadlock, Don Gilbert, Jacob Bell, Joshua Bell.
