Myrtle was born on May 9, 1916 in Star, MS, to the late H.D. and Sarah Elizabeth (Dolly) Laird Morgan. She lived most of her life in this hamlet that she loved and was so proud of. During the latter years of her life she was cared for by her loving great-niece, Sylvia McNeese in her home in Braxton,MS.
Myrtle married the late Ersie D. Finch on July 29, 1939. To this union, a son, Ersie Jr., was born. Unfortunately, her son succumbed to diphtheria while her husband was serving overseas in Europe during World War II.
Star Baptist Church was integral in her life. Many girls in the Star area were positively influenced by Myrtle over the years that she served as Sunday school teacher of the junior girls’ class. Prior to her death, Mrs. Finch was recognized as the oldest member of Star Baptists Church.
With her husband, Myrtle traveled extensively throughout the North American continent. She delighted in bestowing upon family and friends treasures from her travels. Though the Southwest and the vastness of the Dakotas and Montana were favorite destinations for travel, Star was the place to which she longed to return.
In 2009 Myrtle was honored to be named as the Grand Marshall of the inaugural Star Christmas Parade. Myrtle was an avid gardener. She had a green thumb. Her potted plants and variety of lawn flowers were enjoyed by all visitors to her home. She gladly shared specimens with others.
Myrtle was a wonderful cook. Her macaroni and cheese, and huckleberry pie were crowd pleasers.
Myrtle loved nature. The wooded area around her home sheltered a wide variety of wildlife. She cared for the “critters” that shared her home place.
In addition to her husband, son, and parents, Myrtle was preceded in death by her brother, Dan Morgan; her sisters, Clements Morgan Burns, and Viola Morgan Willey; nephews, Ben Morgan, Randy Morgan, and George Willey.
Myrtle leaves behind to cherish her memory, her beloved nephew, Jimmy Morgan; nieces, Shelia Morgan Martin, Rose Kinard, Bessie Lee, and Sarah Young; a host of great nephews and nieces; great-great nephews and nieces, and friends.
She will be missed, but we will be reunited one day.
