Nancy Ulma Bridges Hawthorne

Nancy Ulma Bridges Hawthorne, 96, a longtime resident of Richland, MS, passed from this world Friday, October 28, 2022, to her Heavenly Home to be with her Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ.

Nancy, or Ulma, as she was known by longtime friends and ”Mamaw” by her family, was born in Jefferson Davis County, near Prentiss, MS on December 27, 1925, to Hiram and Minnie Mae Bridges.  Her mother, Minnie Mae, passed away when she was six years old, leaving her father with six children to raise.  Preceding her in death were her brothers, Charles, Johnny and Harvill Bridges.

After a whirlwind courtship of two weeks, she and Grover Samuel (Sammy) Hawthorne were married on March 27, 1944.  A marriage that lasted 67 years, before his death in 2011.

Nancy accepted Christ as her Savior as a young adult.  She loved her Lord, her church, First Baptist Church of Richland, MS, her Sunday School class (The Joy Class), game day at The Community Center in Richland and especially reading her Bible.  She could be found reading her Bible faithfully each day, a habit she taught her children.

The delight of her life was her family.  She leaves behind five children, Barbara Hawthorne Anglin (Gary) of Richland, Grover Kelly Hawthorne (Brenda, deceased) of Florence, Ricky Terrell Hawthorne (Pam) of Richland, Glenn Allen Hawthorne (Tammye) of Richland, and Elizabeth Denise Hawthorne Pearson (Jason) of Poplarville; ten grandchildren, twenty-eight great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren; and two sisters, Maggie Mahaffey of Prentiss, MS and Rose Cordray of Houston, TX.

The service will be held Tuesday, November 1, 2022, at 11:00 am at First Baptist Church, Richland, MS with visitation starting at 9:00 am until 10:45 am at the church.  Dr. Kevin Jones will be officiating the service.  Burial will follow in Glenwood Memorial Park in Richland, MS.  Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, MS.
