Nancy Retha Dickerson Jones passed away at Crossgates River Oaks Hospital on Tuesday, August 12, 2014, at age 90. She was preceded in death by her husband Lee Anderson “Doc” Jones. She is survived by her daughter, Janet Yvonne Jones Drane (David) of Lacombe, LA; son, Lee Anderson Jones, Jr. (Debbie) of Brandon, MS; grandchildren, David Drane, Jr. (Chamar) of Signal Mountain, TN, Dana S’aulis (Chris) of Omaha, NE, Andy Jones III (Patricia) of Madison, MS, Evan Jones (Meghan) of Brandon, MS; great grandchildren, Lilly Drane, Alicia Drane, Branwen S’aulis, Aethon S’aulis, Andrew Jones and Charlotte Jones. She was also preceded in death by her parents Charlie G. and Hattie Lillian McCrory Dickerson, and six brothers and two sisters, John Lewis Dickerson (Frances), Joe Frank Dickerson, Mary Inez Dickerson Garvey (Leonard), Charles Gilbert Dickerson, Clyde Leonard Dickerson, Herbert Allen “Buddy” Dickerson (Eva), Tommie Jean Dickerson Quarles (John), and Mike Lamar Dickerson (Billie Merle). She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Nancy was born in Sallis, Mississippi on November 10, 1923. She graduated from Holmes Agricultural High School in 1942, where she was Valedictorian of her class, and Holmes Junior College in Goodman, MS in 1944, where she was elected May Queen. She received her bachelor’s degree from Mississippi State College for Women in 1946. Nancy took additional studies in elementary education at Mississippi State University in 1973. She taught at Holmes Junior College from 1946 to 1947. After Doc returned from WWII duty as a Marine in the Pacific, they moved to Starkville, MS, where he was a student at Mississippi State. She taught at Cumberland, MS school for one year, 1947-1948. She then taught in Porterville, MS , 1949-1950. The couple moved back to Goodman, MS in 1952. She taught at Goodman Elementary School in 1963. She taught Business at the Manpower Development Training Program in Lexington, MS from 1964 to 1969. She also taught Language Arts from 1970 to 1983 at Durant Elementary School in Durant, MS. She then retired from teaching in 1984 and they moved to Brandon, MS in 1996.
Nancy was a member of Seneasha United Methodist Church. She loved children very much and she helped in many ways with children, as she taught them in church Sunday school and public school.
In her life, she enjoyed her flower gardening and reading.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the visitation at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, MS on Friday, August 15, 2014 from 5pm until 8pm. The graveside service will be held on Saturday, at 11:00am in Seneasha Cemetery in Attala County.
