Norman Fountain

d. December 26, 2013

Norman Neil Fountain of Forest, MS, the son of James Jefferson Fountain and Fanny Monroe Fountain, was born April 8, 1924. Norman returned to his Lord on December 26, 2013.

A graduate of Forest High School in 1942, Norman served as an Aviation Radioman in the Navy during World War II with the Naval Air Force. Upon completion of his service, like many of the “Greatest Generation”, Norman attended Mississippi State A&M on the GI Bill, graduating in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. Norman returned to Forest, MS, joining his father as a Shell oil jobber. In August 8, 1951 Norman would marry Ruby Rone of Ethel, MS; they celebrated their 62nd Anniversary this past August. Norman and Ruby worked shoulder to shoulder building a life in Forest and raising their family. Norman went into business for himself in 1972 as Fountain Oil Company, eventually adding full-service and self-service Shell service stations in Forest before winding down his distribution business. He would sell his businesses and retire in 1997. Norman was a 65 year member of First Baptist Church of Forest, had served as a Deacon and teacher, and was a member of the “55s” Men‘s Sunday School class. Norman also enjoyed his weekly meetings with the Forest Rotary Club, seldom missing a meeting when his health would allow; ultimately receiving their Lifetime Service Award. Anyone who knew Norman, knew he loved to fish - and he was known to spin a yarn or two about his trips to the Reservoir and other favorite fishing holes. True to a fisherman’s motto, he never endured a “bad day” of fishing; and he could also find a reason to “wet a hook”. Norman’s other loves were, of course his wife Ruby, and time with his friends, his children and grandchildren. There was never a year that went by, that Norman and Ruby did not arrange for multiple opportunities to get family together; and those times are forever part of the very fond memories of growing up around “Pappaw” Norman.

Norman was preceded in death by his parents Jeff and Fanny Monroe Fountain, and his son Norman Neil Fountain, Jr.; his brothers Carl and James Fountain, and sisters Nannie Mae and Sarah Fountain.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Ruby Faye (Rone) Fountain, daughters Jo Lynne Smith (Paul) and Lori F McGraw (Bill); grandchildren Erin, Neil, Corley, and Mary Sibley McGraw; Steven Smith and Kayla Smith Kanak (Kevin), and great-grandchild Reagan.

Services will be Sunday, December 29, 2013 at First Baptist Church of Forest, MS. Visitation will be 1:00pm-2:45pm with Funeral to follow at 3pm.
