Paul Day

Known for his love of geology and a good joke, Paul Day, aged 92, passed away peacefully at Brandon Nursing Home and Rehabilitation in Brandon, Mississippi on December 7, 2020.  He was a resident of Madison, Mississippi.  He was born in Yazoo City, Mississippi on November 22, 1928 to Walter and Pauline Day.  Paul spent his early years fishing and working in the family Drug Store in Bentonia, Mississippi, along with his sisters Edna Francis and Walterine.  After graduating from Columbia Military Academy in Columbia, Tennessee, Paul attended Millsaps College in Jackson where he obtained a degree in Geology.  Following military service during the Korean Conflict, he attended Louisiana State University where he obtained a Masters in Geology.

After an early career with Pan American Oil Company in New Orleans, Louisiana and Corpus Christi, Texas, Paul moved to Jackson and began a successful career as an independent geologist in 1968.  He loved his chosen profession, and worked until the age of 88.  He was a member of several professional organizations, including Mississippi Geological Society and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.  Paul was known for his sharp wit and repertoire of corny jokes, and loved to make people laugh.

Paul is survived by his wife of fifteen years, Darlene Day, of Madison, Mississippi and three sons, Lee (Denny) Day of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Steve (Fay) Day of Orlando, Florida, and Andy (Corinne) Day of Madison, Mississippi.  Also grandchildren Benjamin Day, Noah Day, Logan Day, Elizabeth Day-Schick and three great grandchildren.  Survivors also include step-daughters Julie (Dwight) Reeves, Kelly (Kurt) Aumann, and Ruthie (Paul) MacLain.

Paul was one of a small group of founding members of the Chapel of the Cross Episcopal Church in Madison, Mississippi.  Graveside services will be conducted at the Chapel of the Cross cemetery on December 10, 2020 at 11 AM.   In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Chapel of the Cross in Madison, Mississippi.
