Final Rites for Mrs. Pennye Merle Fikes Gatewood, age 98, passed away at Lackey Hospital on April 12, 2011. Services will be conducted by Rev. Paul Earley and Rev. Mike Everett at Ott & Lee Funeral Home Chapel in Forest on Saturday, April 16th at 1pm. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation is on Friday evening from 5pm until 8pm.

She was the seventh member of the family of Jacob Wesley and Sena Sumrall Fikes. All her siblings have preceded her in death as well as her parents; namely Ruth Estells Fikes Jones, Bartley B. Fikes, Glover D. Fikes, Homer W. Fikes, Sherman Fikes, and Howard B. Fikes. Also preceding her in death were several uncles, and aunts, nephews Wilford and Wesley Fikes, nieces, Eva Jones McCormick, Lavonne Estelle Bates, several great nephews, nieces, cousins and other relatives.

Born May 2, 1912, she had experienced many changes, especially in education, having taught 45 years in public schools including counties of Scott, Holmes, Smith, and Marion. Her last 20 years were at Forest Elementary School, Forest, Ms where she taught first grade. Since retiring in 1977 at age 65, she had become involved and active in Homemakers Club, church organizations, Kappa Kappa Sota Sorrority, Scott County Retired Teachers Association, Train Domino Gathering and several home activities.

She married George Gatewood in 1933. They were married for 67 years until his death in 2000. They were not blessed with children, only each other and together they managed to keep her home place a typical southern home.
