Phillip R. Miracle of Brandon, MS, passed away Friday, March 9, 2012. Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 11, 2012, at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Brandon, MS, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Phil will be remembered at a service on Monday, March 12, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation at 10:00 a.m. A graveside service will be held Monday, March 12, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. in the Montgomery Cemetery in Madison, MS. Rev. Rob Gill, Rev. Jimmy Harrison, and Rev. Jim Matheny will be officiating.
Phil was born on August 9, 1935, in Wadsworth, Ohio. He graduated from Wadsworth High School in 1953 and received his degree in Journalism from Kent State University in 1957. He served his country and was honorably discharged from the United States Army in 1963.
Following graduation from Kent State and serving in the Army, he joined Roadway Express in Akron, Ohio. Thereafter, he worked as a sports writer for the Wadsworth News Banner. Phil later joined Westerfield Insurance Company, becoming vice-president for advertising, and served as President of the Insurance Advertising Conference in 1975. He later became manager of public relations for Babcock and Wilcox in Akron, Ohio.
When Babcock and Wilcox was acquired by McDermott International in 1979, Phil and his family moved to New Orleans, where he served as Director of External Communications. In 1988, he went to work for Entergy, where he oversaw communications and advertising for all divisions of the company. He later became the Director of Communications for the Nuclear Division in Jackson, MS. At the time he retired in 2000, he was Vice-President of Corporate Communications for Entergy System.
Phil served the church in many capacities during his nearly 25 years at the church. At the age of 70, he attended Reformed Theological Seminary in Clinton, MS and embarked upon a new career creating his own special counseling ministry. This started with an informal Tuesday morning Bible Study gathering in his deck house. His trusted golden retriever Morrie was always by his side.
Over the years, these meetings grew in number and he later became a regular at Corner Bakery in Flowood, MS. this became his new office where he continued to reach out and touch people in need of employment and career counseling. Phil never met a stranger and no matter how big someone’s problems were, he was there to offer a steady hand.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, June Miracle; daughter, Joan Smith, or New Orleans, LA; daughter, Jean Whitaker and husband, Don, and their daughter, Victoria, of Houston, TX; son, Doug Miracle and wife, Tracy, and their children, Cole and Lauren, of Madison, MS; sister, Kathleen Hull, and husband, Charles, of Fremont, OH; nephew, Jeff Hull, of Missoula, MT; and niece, Sarah Silver, residing in Hong Kong.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Lois Miracle of Wadsworth, Ohio, and nephew, Christopher Hull.
