Raymond Powell Bottom, 90, a resident of Flowood, MS passed away Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at MS Baptist Medical Center in Jackson, MS. A memorial service will be held at 10 am Thursday, January 11, 2018 at Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, MS. Visitation will be held from 9-10 am Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will be held at a later date.
Mr. Bottom was born on May 23, 1927. He was the son of Burt Bottom and Tressie Anderson Bottom. He was married to Linda Loveland Bottom. He was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church. He served as President of the Exchange Club #1639 in Monroe, MI. He served his country in the United States Army including active duty during WWII. Mr. Bottom was reared in Russell Springs, KY. He graduated from Russell Springs High School, received his BS degree from Western Kentucky and Master’s Degree from Eastern Michigan University and Specialist Degree from Wayne State University. He taught History, English and coached basketball for many years. He served as Principal at three schools before becoming superintendent of Monroe Public Schools in Monroe, MI. He authored two books along with numerous magazine articles and poems. He served on the school board of Monroe County Community College.
Mr. Bottom was preceded in death by his daughter, Sandra Miller; parents, Burt Bottom and Tressie Anderson Bottom and his brother, Veston Bottom.
Mr. Bottom is survived by his wife of 46 years, Linda Loveland Bottom; daughter, Cheri (Bill) Creel; brother, William (Sylvia) Bottom; sisters, Jeanette Wolford, Janis Holt; four grandchildren, Holly (Eric) Barnes, Joseph (Emily) Creel, John William Creel and Aidan Creel; one great grandchild, Ian Barnes; many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project.
