March 9, 1950 – May 17, 2014
“I Have Planted”
David Robert Gatlin was born March 9, 1950, in Orlando Florida, the son of Reverend Robert James Gatlin and Sarah Margaret Blankenship Gatlin. He had one sister, Judy Dianne Gatlin Warren (husband David,) and one brother, Daniel Robert Gatlin (wife Clora,) both of Brandon, Mississippi.
David Gatlin was born and raised in Florida. He graduated from South-Eastern Bible College with a Bachelor’s degree in Ministry in 1972, and he began his ministry as Youth Pastor at First Assembly of God in Clearwater, Florida. He completed a Master’s degree in Missions at the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary in 1976. Later in 1976, he went to Egypt as an Assembly of God missionary, where he was the director of the Lillian Trasher Orphanage. While serving there, he received his call to feed people around the world and spread the gospel. Over the course of his ministry, David was awarded three doctorates and traveled in ministry to over 100 countries.
David has five children and seven grandchildren. Oldest daughter, Danielle, married to Bradley Chaney. Oldest son, David II, married to Corrie Ann. Youngest daughter, Gaitha, married to Jonathan Pennington, and sons Jonathan and James.
On several occasions, he had an opportunity to minister in the largest church in the world located in Seoul, Korea. In the early 1990’s, he started a bus ministry and feeding ministry in El Paso, Texas, at Abundant Living Faith Center that reached tens of thousands of families.
In more recent years, David was the founder and director of Genesis Food Bank (founded in 1997) in inner city Jackson, Mississippi, regularly feeding hundreds of families. Just this year he answered a call to become administrator of Bethel Mission, a multinational ministry based in Roma, Texas, established 70 years ago for the purpose of planting churches and ministries in Mexico. David and his wife Deana and their son, James, moved to Roma in January of 2014, where they have already seen amazing growth and strengthening of the ministries under the Bethel Mission umbrella. They are pastoring two churches there: Bethel Temple, in Roma, Texas, and The Dream Center in Miguel Aleman, Mexico.
A lifelong visionary, David planted, watered and grew the church. David was called to rest on May 17, 2014.
I Corinthians 3:6-7: I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. So then neither is he that planteth anything, neither he that watereth; but God giveth the increase.
