Rev. John Carter, 93, passed away Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at We Care Hospice in Pascagoula. Visitation is 5-8 pm Sunday, May 2, 2010 at Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Brandon. Services will be held at 11 am Monday, May 3, 2010 at Shiloh United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery.

Rev. Carter was born August 20, 1916 and was raised in the Shiloh Community in Rankin County. He attended Shiloh, Gulde, and Cross Roads schools and graduated in 1935 from Cross Roads. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II. After returning home, he worked in sales with N. O. Nelson Company in Jackson. While employed with the N. O. Nelson Company, he married the love of his life, Edith Roberts in 1946 and after 54 years together, God called Edith home. After working for the N. O. Nelson Company, he traveled for Kraft Wholesale Grocery Company in Jackson.

Rev. Carter continued his education and graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi and in 1949 he answered God’s call to preach. He attended Millsaps College in Jackson and Asbury College in Kentucky. Rev. Carter’s first appointment was in Puckett, as his ministry continued he served the people of Burns Charge in Smith County, Boling Street in Jackson, Heidelberg in Heidelberg, Eastlawn in Pascagoula, Leavel Woods in Jackson, Morton United Methodist and Raleigh United Methodist. In 1983, he “officially” retired and moved back to his hometown in the Shiloh Community to take it “easy”. However, retirement was not the end of his ministry. He continued to serve the Lord and the people and churches of the United Methodist Conference at the Freeny- Madden Charge, Puckett and Lodebar. Rev Carter served 23 years at Lodebar and after 60 years of preaching, he retired again in 2009.

Preceding him in death was his wife, Edith Roberts Carter; his parents, Marvin and Carrie Carter; brothers, James, George, Chester, Roy and Claiborne Carter.

Survivors include his daughter, Cindy Lovorn and husband Jim of Pascagoula; son, Sam Carter of Pelahatchie; sisters, Ruth Rhodes of Brandon and Ora Mae White of Pelahatchie; five grandchildren, Jennifer, Samantha and Todd Carter, Chris Lovorn and Lisa Miller; four great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
