Rev. John Clifton Purvis, 71, a resident of Polkville near Morton died Saturday, August 27, 2011 at home surrounded by his family. Visitation was held 5-8 pm Sunday at the funeral home and 10-11 am Monday at the church. Funeral services were held 11 am Monday, August 29, 2011 at First Baptist Church of Polkville with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. Aaron Safley officiated the services. Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Morton was in charge of arrangements.
Rev. Purvis was a native of Smith Co. He was the son of Jessie Floyd and Margaret Marie Moore Purvis. He was married to Myrtle Delores Smith Purvis. Rev. Purvis loved the Lord and accepted his call to the ministry at age 37 and served many churches as Pastor, Goodwater Baptist Church of Meehan, MS, Magee Creek Baptist Church of Jayess, MS, Rena Lara Baptist Church of Rena Lara, MS, New Good Hope Baptist Church of Pulaski, MS, Sardis Baptist Church, Morton, MS, Mars Hill Baptist Church of Edinburg, MS where he was presently serving as Pastor. Rev. Purvis proudly served his country in the United States Navy. He loved his family and grandchildren and spending time with them brought great joy to his life. He will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew him.
Rev. Purvis was preceded in death by his parents, Jessie Floyd and Margaret Marie Moore Purvis and sister, Alice Virginia Young.
Rev. Purvis is survived by his wife of 51 years, Myrtle Delores “Dee” Smith Purvis of Polkville, son, John Craig Purvis of TX; sister, Mary Francis Ross (Pete) of Polkville; brother, James William Purvis (Bettye) of Satsuma, AL; 2 grandchildren, John Craig Purvis, Jr. (Cassi) and James Colton Purvis; 1 great grandchild, Kaleb Ryan Purvis; 4 nieces, 2 nephews and a host of friends.
Serving as pallbearers were, Robert Owen Phillips, Colton Purvis, Craig Purvis, Ray Young, Carl Young, Sammy Purvis and Pete Ross.
