Rev. Wayland Hamlin, 62, born September 6, 1941 in Shady Glen, OH. Wayland went to be with his Lord and Savior Sunday, June 3, 2012. His battle with pancreatic cancer was over and he is pain free. Wayland loved his family and his country. He joined the Army at a young age, training in Korea and battled in the Vietnam War, being there during the Tet Offensive. He was wounded in Vietnam and still carried the shrapnel. He was a decorated soldier-Bronze Star, Purple Heart among others.
When he returned from the War, he married his sweetheart, Naomi June Grooms of Latham, OH. They quickly began their family of two boys and two girls. When he was 40 years old, he rejoined the military as a Chaplain. He served with U.S. Army, MS Army National Guard, U.S. Army Reserves retiring as Colonel. He was activated in support of Desert Shield, Desert Storm, and activated three times, deployed twice, in support of Operation of Iraqi Freedom.
He attended Circleville Bible College, Circleville, OH, Wesley Biblical Seminary, Jackson, MS, Reformed Theological Seminary, Clinton, MS. He became a minister in 1974, pastoring in Ohio, Tennessee and Mississippi for 40 years.
He loved learning, books and reading. He was mechanically inclined and did woodworking. He loved people, was a servant leader. He loved his wife, children, grandchildren and the farm.
He is welcomed in Heaven by two children, his first born, Julie Renee and his youngest son, Elbert Brian. He is survived by his wife, Naomi June; son, Wayland Jay; daughter, Angela Dawn Maily and son-in-law, Sean; and seven grandchildren, Matthew, Noah, Ava, Brian Luke, Chloe, Caleb and Elli; two brothers, and two sisters.
The funeral service will be 10am Thursday, in the chapel of Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon with burial on the family farm in Pelahatchie, MS. Visitation will be Wednesday 4pm until 7pm at the funeral home.
