Rickey Jay Brooks, Sr., 70, of Hebron, MS, passed away on Friday, February 28, 2025, at UMMC in Jackson, MS.
He was born on August 11, 1954, to Verdo and Mae Jewel Brooks in Malden, Missouri.
Rickey met his wife, Sharon, at the skating rink in Laurel, MS. They were married on May 24, 1975. Over the years, the family grew to five with the births of Jay, Seliena, and Matthew.
Rickey and Sharon called the Bay Springs/Stringer area home for almost 30 years. Through the years, Rickey enjoyed coaching his kids in baseball, playing golf, fixing and customizing golf carts, and spending time with his family. He loved playing Co-Ed softball in his younger years and hanging out with his cousins playing cards or darts on the weekends. In his later years, golfing took the place of softball and staying home took precedence over going out.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon Lee Gambill Brooks; his father, William “Verdo” Brooks; his mother, Mae Jewel Dearman Brooks; and his brother, Mark Allen Brooks.
He is survived by his children, Rickey “Jay” Brooks, Jr. (Kelly) of Brandon, MS, Seliena Johnson (Heath) of Box Elder, SD, and Matthew Brooks of Hebron, MS; his grandchildren, Kyle Brooks (Kortney) of Brandon, MS, Nathaniel Johnson of Box Elder, SD, Isaiah Johnson of Box Elder, SD, Noah Johnson of Box Elder, SD, Brice Brooks of Hebron, MS, Zechariah “Zippy” Johnson of Box Elder, SD, Samantha Brooks of Hebron, MS, Lilibeth Johnson of Box Elder, SD, Dawson Brooks of Hebron, MS, Malachi Johnson of Box Elder, SD, Benjamin Johnson of Box Elder, SD, Josiah Johnson of Box Elder, SD, Susannah Johnson of Box Elder, SD, Ella Grace Johnson of Box Elder, SD, Ezekiel “Easy” Johnson of Box Elder, SD, and Phillip Johnson of Box Elder, SD; his great grandchild, Graham Brooks of Brandon, MS; his siblings, Serita Bynum of Bay Springs, MS, and Regina Harris of Stringer, MS; and numerous nephews, nieces, and friends.
